Mesothelioma Survival Rates

Mesothelioma Survival Rates : Mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin, transparent two-layer membrane that lines the lungs and the inside of the chest wall. The most common symptoms are persistent chest pain and shortness of breath. A chest X-ray and a biopsy or cytological examination of lung tissue are required to make the diagnosis

Asbestos can cause cancer of the pleura (the thin, transparent, two-layer membrane that covers the lungs and the inner part of the chest wall), which is called mesothelioma, or of the membranes of the abdomen. In the United States and Europe, asbestos (asbestos) is the only known cause of mesothelioma. Smoking is not a causal factor. Mesothelioma Survival Rates

Asbestos (asbestos) consists of fibrous mineral silicates of different chemical compositions. Usually, mesothelioma appears after exposure to crocidolite, one of the four types of asbestos. Another type, amosite, can also cause mesothelioma. Chrysotile probably causes fewer cases of mesothelioma than the other types, but it is often contaminated with tremolite, which, on the contrary, is often responsible for it. Usually, mesothelioma develops 30 years after exposure, albeit for a short time.

Mesothelioma and other diseases caused by asbestos inhalation can be prevented by minimizing metal dust and fibers in the workplace. As factories that use asbestos have improved dust control, asbestosis is currently less and less common, but mesothelioma occurs in individuals who were exposed as early as 30-50 years ago.

Persistent chest pain and shortness of breath are the most common symptoms of mesothelioma. If mesothelioma spreads to the chest wall or adjacent structures in the chest, people may experience severe pain, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, drooping of the eyelids, weakness and numbness in the arm or hand, or abdominal swelling.

When doctors suspect mesothelioma, a chest X-ray is usually done. Usually, a sample of fluid from the pleural cavity is analyzed (pleural fluid cytology) and a sample of pleural tissue is examined (pleural biopsy) to look for the characteristic changes due to mesothelioma.

Further tests may be needed to determine if mesothelioma has spread outside the pleura.

Treatment

💥  Surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy  Mesothelioma Survival Rates 💥

Mesotheliomas always have fatal outcomes 1-4 years after diagnosis. Most people live just another 9-12 months after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not effective and surgical removal of the tumor is not conclusive.

However, surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy can be useful for relieving symptoms. It is unclear whether the combination of different types of treatments can prolong life. Mesothelioma Survival Rates

Other therapies aim to control pain and shortness of breath in an attempt to preserve the quality of life as much as possible (Symptoms of Lethal Disease). For example, fluid drainage around the lungs can aid breathing, and analgesics can relieve pain. Mesothelioma Survival Rates

Symptoms are different depending on the type. In pleural mesothelioma, the most frequent form, there are: wheezing due to pleural effusion, cough and chest pain, difficult  Mesothelioma Survival Rates  swallowing, swelling of the neck and face, which are associated with a general state of malaise and weight loss.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are not specific and include: weight loss, cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites, intestinal obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever. If the tumor extends beyond the mesothelium to other organs, the symptoms depend on the level of involvement of the compromised organ. Mesothelioma Survival Rates.
